Stitch Diagrams

You have heard the names of a wide variety of embroidery stitches used in cross-stitch. Here you can learn from a description and a graphical display how to achieve these stitches.

Tent Stitch (Continental)

Tent Stitch

This is one of the most versatile and most used stitches in needlework. It can be worked vertically, horizontally, or diagonally. This stitch should only be used for small areas as it tends to distort or pull the canvas out of shape.

Mounting the canvas on a frame will reduce the distortion. This stitch is worked in horizontal rows from right to left. It is worked in vertical rows from top to bottom and diagonal rows from the top left to lower right.

Follow the numbers on the diagram, coming up at 1 and all odd numbers and going down at 2 and all even numbers. The Tent stitch provides a smooth effect, resulting in little pattern or texture
